Bamboo Logic Events (Oct 2008) and Bamboo Plants Available

Greetings to the Bamboo Logic Community,

Thanks to an unusually cool weather for September in Central Texas and the coming of what actually feels like Autumn, we've received a number of emails and calls from those of you who are eager to get bamboo established at your residences.  We typically recommend planting bamboo from October to April, when the temperatures are cool enough to ensure that new plants will get established successfully and with the least amount of cost (less water).

We presently have Bambusa tuldoides ('punting pole') and Bambusa textilis ('weaver's bamboo') in 15-gallon pots for $200 each.  Tuldoides is a crowd-thriller with its hefty bluish-green culms reaching 2.75" in diameter and as tall as 40 ' tall!  Textilis has more modest proportions, reaching 1.5 - 2' in diameter and about 20 - 25' tall.

Both are clumping, non-invasive species that will serve you well both practically (for privacy/sound screening, shade production) as well as providing a lush, serene esthetic for your landscape. We can provide you with plants to install yourself or can have our crew install them for you.

In addition to these species, we also have Bambusa Malingensis ('Sea Breeze'), Bambusa multiplex ('Alphonse Karr' and 'Golden Goddess'), Bambusa textiliis ('Kanapaha, which reaches a staggering 65' tall!), and the lovely Eutuldoides veridi-vittata ('Lemon Bamboo').   These  are available in either 15- or 30-gallon containers, ranging in price from $200 to $325.

The next Bamboo Logic Seminar will be held on Saturday, October 11th from 10am to Noon at Casa de Luz.  $20 cost includes seminar, tour, and handouts. Topics covered will include bamboo horticulture, growth habits & rates, species types; problem-solving for the invasive (“running”) bamboos by either containment or non-chemical eradication strategies; and landscape applications for non-invasive (“clumping”) bamboos which includes species selection, installation, and maintenance. Register and pay online at www.bamboo-logic.com or contact Jinji Willingham at bamboologic@mac.com or 512-350-8505 for details.

The next Bamboo Workshop at the Town Lake Grove will be October 25th, from 10 am to 1pm. We provide a free version of the Bamboo Logic Seminar in exchange for volunteering to help groom the grove on the Town Lake Hike and Bike Trail.  Bamboo Logic will provide tools, sunscreen, water, and snacks.  Please bring garden gloves and hats.  (The grove is situated directly on east side the trail, just north of Barton Springs Road and the Barton Creek footbridge.  There's is ample parking along Toomey Road, which turns into a foot-path that leads directly to the trail.)  Please sign up for the event at www.bamboo-logic.com or contact Jinji Willingham at bamboologic@mac.com or 512-350-8505.

Finally, Bamboo Logic and Casa de Luz have adopted a stretch of South Lamar through the Keep Austin Beautiful Adopt-a-Street Program, and will hold quarterly work mornings to beautify South Austin.

As always, we're available to do on-site consultations at your residence or business to solve any problems with invasive bamboo (containment, eradication) and make species/design recommendations with clumping, non-invasive species, or design/install your landscape with a variety of non-invasive bamboo and native plants.

Enjoy this beautiful fall weather!
